The Rolling Stones
Thanks to record-breaking tours and a string of classic albums, The Rolling Stones can rightly call themselves the greatest rock 'n' roll band in the world.
The Rolling Stones formed in London in the early 1960s. The lineup stabilized early on around singer Mick Jagger, guitarists Brian Jones and Keith Richards, bassist Bill Wyman, and drummer Charlie Watts. After his death in 1969, Brian Jones was replaced by Mick Taylor (ex-John Mayall's Bluesbreakers) and Ron Wood (ex-The Faces), respectively. From their first albums, the young band was inspired by American rhythm 'n' blues and rock 'n' roll, but later other musical influences emerged. Their Satanic Majesties Request (1967), for example, emerged as a psychedelic excursion.
The response was somewhat lukewarm, after which the band quickly returned to their raw, pure sound. This resulted in a series of timeless classics in the form of Beggars Banquet (1968), Let It Bleed (1969), Sticky Fingers (1971), and Exile on Main St. (1972). A series that wouldn't be complete without the equally legendary live album Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out! (1970), a thrilling impression of the 1969 American tour.
In later years, The Rolling Stones were often written off, but with albums like Some Girls (1978) and Tattoo You (1981) – featuring the hits Miss You and Start Me Up – they managed to bounce back just as often. In the period that followed, the breaks between albums became longer, partly because Mick Jagger and Keith Richards opted for solo careers, which proved successful thanks to albums like She's The Boss (1985) and Talk Is Cheap (1988).
From the 1990s onward, The Rolling Stones focused primarily on lucrative world tours, regularly breaking records, especially financially. That their musical heart was still in the right place was evident when the band surprised fans in 2016 with the vibrant album Blue & Lonesome: a collection of covers of old blues songs recorded live in the studio.
